Environmental Policy
The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) is committed to proactively meeting our stewardship responsibilities as a federal agency, lowering environmental liability, and ensuring mission success. We are continually working to maintain and improve our environmental program.
The MDA strives to integrate environmental requirements into systems engineering processes and long-term planning to minimize the lifecycle environmental impacts of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS).
The MDA will maintain its environmental stewardship by:
- Complying with statutory and regulatory environmental requirements,
- Pursuing pollution prevention as the preferred means of meeting existing or emerging environmental requirements,
- Establishing and updating environmental objectives and targets,
- Using "green" procurement and technologies where practical to efficiently conserve resources over the BMDS lifecycle,
- Conserving and sustaining cultural and natural resources at host test ranges, installations, and facilities, and
- Providing MDA personnel and contractors with environmental awareness training and recognizing and rewarding outstanding environmental stewardship.

National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was established to foster and promote the general welfare, to create and maintain conditions under which man and nature can exist in productive harmony, and fulfill the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations of Americans. While NEPA affirmed each person's responsibility to preserve and enhance the environment, it emphasized the federal government's leading role in that effort.
NEPA requires all federal agencies to consider the environmental impacts of their proposed impacts and reasonable alternatives to those actions. The NEPA process is intended to help public officials make decisions that are based on understanding environmental consequences and take actions that protect, restore, and enhance the environment.
The NEPA process consists of an evaluation of the environmental effects of a federal undertaking including its alternatives. The NEPA process enables us to make informed decisions about the consequences of our projects, to inform the public about our findings, and to take actions that will protect the environment.
MDA's NEPA program is managed by the Facilities, Military Construction and Environmental Management Directorate. The program ensures MDA is proactive in meeting its Federal stewardship responsibilities while ensuring mission success and lowering environmental liability.
